Wild Animals of the Yard, Farm, Park, and Wildlands
Our neighborhood community is inhabited by more than simply the people, pets, and livestock we interact with as we live, work, play, and educate ourselves. Our neighborhood includes many wild animals, from large to microscopic.
We acquire awareness of wild members of our neighborhood community primarily through sight and sound. Except for decompositional bacteria, stinkbugs, skunks and occasional bigfoots, we seldom detect the odors of wild animals. Our wild community neighbors are typically just too far away to smell. But they are often close enough to see and hear. By watching them and listening to them we can learn much about them.
“What is that moving under on that bush? What kind of bush is that? What is making what sound?” “What kind of tree is that sound coming from?” These are typical questions asked by children and adults alike while out exploring the natural, wild parts of our neighborhoods. It helps to be prepared for those questions.
Below is a list of field guide books and CD’s that will help you identify and learn more about the wild animals you are seeing and hearing “out there”. They are great training aids to use as you teach the children well, so carry some of them along with you in the yard, on the farm, in the park, and while “out there” exploring the wildlands.
